A tour of the Berlin Fruit Box Company is a look at how a variety of baskets are made the old fashion way. This company has been making baskets for 153 years and continues to do make them by hand as they were in the company’s beginning. The company is currently run by the sixth generation of the Samuel Patterson family. The company is known for its history of making fruit baskets and is the second oldest basket business in the country.

Tours are offered on weekdays during the summer months and appointments are available during winter months. Today’s company offers a variety of unique baskets made from unique woods including that of the state’s Buckeye tree. Learn how the wood is prepared, cut into strips, and watch as the weavers make one of kind baskets.

Thrills on the Hills

One of the most popular amusement parks in the United States is located on the point in Sandusky. This famed family attraction sits along the shore of Lake Erie and screams and thrills are abundant on the 364 acres of fun. With 17 roller coasters and 55 amusement rides, the kids and kids at heart will have a blast.

Planet Snoopy offers thrills for the little ones and there are shows and a variety of attractions that will please everyone including grandma and grandpa. In October the midway is filled with goblins during the annual Monster Midway event. The park is open May through October.

Not enough excitement? Then go on a safari at the African Country Safari. At this drive-thru park, everyone gets up close and personal with the elephants, lions, and giraffes, oh my. Before driving through the park enjoy the zoo-like walking area which has a host of animals, pony rides, and animal shows. Each car receives buckets of food and instructions on how to feed the animals once inside the gates where the buffalo roam. There is a gift shop and snack bar on the premises and each car can drive through more than once. It is a good idea to check seasonal times before visiting.
